Welcome
Welcome to the website of the Greater New York Gesneriad Society. We are a group of houseplant enthusiasts interested in the “Miracle Houseplants,” plants that include African Violets, Florist Gloxinias, Cape Primroses (Streptocarpus) and many other common houseplants.
Smithiantha
Saturday, June, 20th
Who can resist its charms? With showy flowers and colorful, often velvety foliage, this seasonal bloomer can be counted on to brighten your day in late fall and early winter. It also crosses easily with Eucadonia and Achimenes, making for a nice selection of intergeneric crosses for us. Our guest speaker in June, Quentin Schlieder, who tell us all we need to know about this genus, is the former Executive Director of the Morris County (New Jersey) Parks Commission, which includes Frelinghuysen Arboretum. Quentin is now retired and lives in Smyrna, Delaware, where he is active in historic preservation and public beautification of his adopted hometown. Join us in June as we close out the meeting year with Quentin’s talk that will prepare us for growing Smithiantha later this year.
We meet at the LGBT Center , 208 West 13th Street, between 7th and 8th Avenues, in Manhattan (Subways: A, C, E, 1, 2, 3, 9 to 14th Street, L to 8th Avenue). Meetings are from 11 am to 2 pm, with the program starting at 12 noon. The facilities are wheelchair accessible. Our monthly meetings feature an educational program, plant sales, raffle, a judged “Little Show” and socializing. Plants, cuttings, seeds, growing supplies and advice always available.
The Greater New York Gesneriad Society is a chapter of The Gesneriad Society, formerly the American Gloxinia and Gesneriad Society.
